HOUSING DENSITY PRE-PLANNING TOOLKIT IN URBAN DESIGN

The Urban Design Group's journal Urban Design 120 Autumn 2011 features an article on a housing density and typology toolkit developed by MJP with Richard MacCormac that will enable local authorities and local people to visualise at an early pre-planning stage the effects of higher residential densities upon the character of suburban areas. It demonstrates that higher densities need not mean the dominance of high buildings and the loss of suburban amenities. The approach offers an instrument for empowering local people and influencing planning briefs.

The toolkit has been developed from MJP's 'Sustainable Suburbia’ research report supported by the HCA - a presentation of which can be found at www.sustainablesuburbia.co.uk and from where copies of the report can be requested.
