KENDREW QUADRANGLE ARTICLE IN TW
ST JOHN'S COLLEGE ALUMNI MAGAZINE
The summer 2011 edition of TW - the magazine for the alumni of St John's College Oxford - features a six page spread on MJP's Kendrew Quadrangle - entitled 'Under the Greenwood Tree, or How a Green Building Blossomed'.
The article concludes "Significantly, not least in those praising the building were the students who had already moved into it and who had first-hand experience of its delights. Unusually for projects on this scale, it opened on time and within budget, and with its ecological goals attained. It is a building of the 21st century both in design and technological innovation, one of which we and future generations can be justly proud".
Kendrew Quadrangle - named after Sir John Kendrew (1917-1997) Benefactor, Nobel prize winning Chemist and President of St John's 1982-1987 - is the third MJP designed building at St Johns College Oxford. 6000sqm in area over four floors with a large basement the Kendrew Quadrangle consists of 80 student rooms with 6 flats for college fellows and related academic and communal facilities. It is arranged in a quadrangle open to the South. The scheme has a strong sustainability strategy while the design was informed by the historical significance of the central beech tree and adjacent listed buildings.
