MJP were appointed by Cambridge University to masterplan a 66ha site for science departments and associated independent research organisations. The site also accommodates sports and social facilities and University residences. Outline Planning Approval was obtained for approximately 180,000m2 of development.
The development is a shift in the centre of gravity of the University, away from the town centre, and has major implications for both the University and the town.
The masterplan provides a framework for phased development, supported by detailed design guidelines, creating a new piece of the city, with a lively social and visual character.
The masterplan is flexible to accommodate the designs of other architects and addresses a wide range of issues:
Urban design: linked public squares and routes, with a lake, canal and colonnade, create a sense of place
Social and intellectual interaction
Visual character: precedents are drawn from historic Cambridge
Phasing: the landscape and colonnade will unify the site during development
Planning issues: the location is adjacent to the green belt
Ecology and landscape design
Transportation: strategies promote a pedestrian and cycle friendly environment.
