Located on the south west of Jersey close to St. Brelade's Bay, Portelet Bay is an attractive, secluded bay with a southerly aspect, and a crescent shaped beach sheltered by granite cliffs on three sides. The proposed development of 7 new houses and 45 apartments occupies the site of a former holiday village, elevated 40 metres above the beach and facing south.
The architectural language of the buildings is informed by the prominent site location and the excellent orientation and views from the site.
All buildings have largely glazed south elevations, framed by white rendered planar walls to take maximum advantage of daylight and exceptional views. The language of planar walls is also employed in the landscaping design. The ground storey of the apartments blocks is in part a parking undercroft, and this is expressed as a granite base on which the buildings sit. This base also forms a podium between the buildings which creates areas of shared garden at podium level.
The granite wall which edges the road creates a kind of rampart which contains and binds the houses together.
